looking-over-mountainsFor my final project to finish the Photoshop station I decided to combine Photoshop with some of my own digital photography. The top photo is of a girl after skiing, the whole photo is taken of Breckenridge ski mountain, both of these photos were taken by me. My Idea behind my final edit was a local skier overlooking the mountain as if she knew it all. In this edit I learned how to create a layer mask by dragging both wanted photos into Photoshop then pressing the square with a circle inside icon found in the layers toolbar. Next, I made sure the top layer was placed over the bottom layer to fit just the top of her face above the ridge line. After the photos were placed how I wanted them, I had to change the opacity of the top layer in order to see the sky through her face. I made the change by a tutorial by going to the layer chosen, in the layer toolbar and clicking the drop down of opacity. Next I had to get rid of the rest of the face covering the mountains, so I used a paintbrush tool and painted over the layer masks so that the mountains would show through. This would have to be my favorite tool because you can blend so many things together. My advice would be to use “Photoshop Tutorials” on YouTube for the best tips and tricks.

For my first station I chose Sketch Up. I chose this because architecture is a topic that I was very interested in. I had some experience with the program, like the basic tools, but I needed more. So I watched Sketch Up beginner tutorials on YouTube and they were very helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsHRGDvN4sM. So after the tutorial I then went into Sketch-Up and got started. I first made a rectangle using the rectangle tool and made it 3d using the push/pull tool. I then made an opening and made a rectangle in the opening. I then colored that translucent(like a window) using the materials bar – translucent – blue. I kept doing processes like that to make a house. So after you learn to use the simple tools in Sketch-Up, you kind of just figure it out from there. But I would definitely look at the tutorial because it is very helpful in learning how to do Sketch-Up.

photoshop-finalFor my final project for Photoshop, at first, I just wanted to enhance an image that I had taken off of my phone. I soon realized that this was too simple and wanted to add another element. What better way to do this than make a goofy chrome book wallpaper for your friend? After enhancing the background using simple tools such and the sharpen and quick selection tools, it was time to incorporate his face. I grabbed a picture of him off of my phone, and cropped everything out of the image except for his face. Then, after much struggling and video watching, I was able to change the opacity to make the foreground more transparent. After messing around with Photoshop for the past few weeks, I suggest that one should not be afraid to look things up, You will never get anywhere if you try to figure everything out yourself. Another tip that I have for future Photoshoppers is ask around. I was lucky enough to have someone very experienced with Photoshop in the class with me. Since my final project involved adjusting the opacity of a layer, a very helpful video tutorial that I found was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd5I9Kk4cQc

For my final project in Photoshop I combined three different photos to create this idea of the mountain lifestyle here in Colorado. I took the background photo of the mountain and used editing techniques to darken the photo, I found a very helpful tutorial online for lightening and darkening photos. For the skier I took the image and outlined it with the pen tool and created this silhouette of the skier. Finally I took the Colorado flag and placed it over the combined mountain and skier I placed a layer mask on the layer and lowered the opacity down to about 45%. I used the components of creating silhouettes, layer masks, photo editing and experimentation with opacity to create my final project. I found tutorials for all of these steps online making this project flow much smoother. My advice would be to come up with your final at the beginning so each of your activities can be used to help make your final project easier. If you are interested in this type of project the following tutorials could come in handy, http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/silhouettes/

finalFor my final project I decided to create a collaboration of photos on a city landscape with the Lorax to confront the ever growing issue of how industrialization and development of cities is damaging natural environments. I first first found a picture of a busy city scene to use as the background. Then in another window I found a picture of a picture frame and I added a picture of a natural setting to put inside of the picture frame. I then got a picture of the Lorax and edited it using layer masks and the gradient tool to make it seem as though he is holding the picture frame. Last I used a tutorial I found online to learn how to drop a shadow on the Lorax to make the photo more realistic. An important tool used in my final was that of layer masks. I used tutorials I found on youtube to investigate how I could use layer masks and layering of photos to construct the theme and mood I was looking for. I also incorporated as many as the skills I used in my activities in my final, I used layer, combining, and editing photos in my final. One piece of advice I would give to someone using Photoshop is to use tutorials, either online or from the resources given to us. Photoshop is often confusing and has endless possibilities and options so closely following tutorials allows you to understand the concept you are trying to achieve and so you are able to apply it to your own photos.

For my first station I did digital painting. I would highly recommend this station! It is great to learn how to use different tools and techniques in adobe Photoshop. In the beginning, it was very frustrating to do, but after I started using the wacom pad it was much easier. If you are doing this station I would use the wacom pad right away because just using the mouse can be very difficult. I used a website, https://design.tutsplus.com/articles/6-easy-tips-for-making-realistic-digital-paintings–cms-23665 . This website was very helpful for finding what techniques I needed to use in order to make a digital painting look realistic. Also in the class files I followed the digital painting tutorials. This was very helpful in developing my digital painting skills. For this station I recommend putting on the scattering tool right away because it really helps with all the blending that you will need to do.I really struggled with blending, but I solved that by using the scattering tool. Also before you start any tutorials, I would test out the tools that you a given. By doing this you can get to know all the settings and know exactly where they are when you begin. The smudge tool was probably the most tool used throughout all of the tutorials because, you will constantly be working on your blending skills. Use a two monitor computer so you can digital paint on one and have the tutorials to follow on the other. This first image below was my very first attempt at digital painting.  As you can see it is very blurry because instead of using the smudge tool on the scattering setting I used the blur tool. The first tutorial took the longest because I had to go back and keep blending the lines in the eyes. The second picture (princess Leia) is my final. As you can see it is not a blurry as the first picture. My final took lots of patience and time because of the extreme amount of detail.I really struggled with the eyes on princess Leia, if you are doing anything with lots of detail, I recommend giving yourself lots of time to work on it. This allows you to really take your time on what your struggling with. Overall, this station was amazing and would be great for any one who likes art.

For my first station in tech lab I decided to go with sketch up because I have never used this program before. To get to know the program, I used the sketch up folder and a you tube video which I found very helpful to get me started. After I learned the basics, it was easier to find out other tricks to building things neater and faster. Once I was comfortable with the program, I decided I wanted to build a modern house because I though they would be a good project to start on because they had basic shapes. The most helpful thing for me was when I learn how to copy and paste shapes. It made making windows and door way easier and it made them symmetrical. Overall, sketch up is a really fun program and it is super easy to use and learn.

For my first station I choose digital photography. This station helps you learn about good techniques for photography and also how to bring your photos to the next level. This station is fun because you get to choose exactly what you want to take pictures of and you have a lot of freedom I what you can create. For example you have the option to cross the street and take photos of the lake and the river that flows into it. or you could stay in the school and experiment with the many settings the cameras have. Something I found while doing this station was the one thing that will create a amazing picture is the creativity to make it different and use different settings, aspects, places, and so on. For my project I experimented with the cameras long exposure and a flashlight. It took a few class periods for us to see how exactly it worked and what situation created a better product from it.So if your doing this station its important to remember you can take multiple class periods on one aspect of the camera this will let you to understand the aspects more and will ultimately lead to your pictures turning out better. I did hit the point where i was struggling to find another creative way to use the camera so I used the Tech lab folder that Mr. Karden  shared with us this helped a lot and i would recommend visiting it if you dont know where to start. This picture is one of the ones we shot outside however I used Photoshop to combine it with another we took. lil-mind-and-river

In this station I learned how to use a camera. For example, long exposure shots or knowing when u need a faster shutter speed or to know what the right ISO is for the environment its in. I got to try different techniques and activities with the camera such as taking long exposure shots or taking photos outside on a dark day and trying to take a good shot. This was great activity if someone wanted to know more about cameras and what each thing is meant for on the camera. I tried more technical shot such as long exposures or a faster shutter speed. You will have to play with the cameras fetures to know what each thing does. Like being able to change the F stop, etc. We found that with a long exposure it takes in the light for longer in a small spot so we drew with like while the photo was being taken. There isn’t much resources that I used it was more of a trial and error the only way I learned things is by trying something and if it didn’t work I tried it a different way to see if it worked better.
